Discover Maple River will inspire a total of 80 to 100 seventh and eighth-grade students from Newaygo and Muskegon County school districts, private schools, and home schools with a learning-by-doing experience, demonstrations, and classroom instruction from the professional biologists, scientists, and engineers working on the Maple River Restoration Project. This field trip will include a hiking adventure to a rare wild rice stand (Manoomin), and a cultural and scientific exploration into the importance of this native plant through the use of Traditional Environmental Knowledge (TEK), provided by the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians.
