MRWA Welcomes New Director

On behalf of the Muskegon River Watershed Assembly, I am pleased to announce that Richard Houtteman has accepted a seat on our board of directors. Mr. Houtteman brings a notable skill set to the MRWA including expertise in strategic planning along with a wealth of experience gained through an impressive professional career.

Rich is currently in his fourth year as the Community Affairs Manager for Consumers Energy, Michigan’s largest energy provider. He proudly serves the Lakeshore Region, ensuring his customers and communities receive the hometown service Consumers Energy aims to provide.

He has worked in a number of settings in municipal and economic development, with the City of Kentwood as his most recent prior to the utility.

Rich serves on a variety of boards including the United Way of the Lakeshore, Muskegon Area First Board, West Michigan Shoreline Regional Development Commission, and White Lake Area Chamber of Commerce.

Rich attended GVSU obtaining Public Administration Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees. He graduated from Whitehall High School. He enjoys living in White Lake with his wife Gina, children Rachel and Jack along with their dog Murphy.

According to Ken Johnson, MRWA Board Chair, “Rich is obviously a great fit for our organization and a most welcome addition to our board. I look forward to his contributions.”

Commenting on his interest in the organization, Rich explained, “I have been impressed with the MRWA for several years as a project based, results oriented environmental organization. Additionally, the focus on protecting the Muskegon River resonates with me. I am proud to accept this position and believe I can make a real contribution to the board.”
